Sharps Safety for at

home injections

It is very important to know how to throw away (dispose of) syringes, needles and any other sharp device in a safe way. By disposing of sharps in the right way, you are keeping yourself, your child, other family members and your home care worker safe.

There are two types of sharps containers:

Medical-issued sharps container with biohazard symbol

  • Given to patients when small containers are available
  • Can be purchased on amazon or at your local Walmart or pharmacy

Sharps containers made at home

  • Best containers are hard plastic laundry detergent bottles with cap/lid allowing for easy disposal
  • DO NOT use milk containers, water bottles, clear plastic containers, glass containers or soda cans
  • Label at home sharps container as biohazard material

How to get rid of sharps:

  • Give injection per the prescriber’s instructions
  • Do not re-cap used needle/syringe
  • Put the used syringe with the needle into the sharps container you have on hand
  • Make sure the sharp end, or the pointed end, goes into the container first and is not sticking out of the top of the container.
  • Once the sharps container is ¾ full close the lid on the medical-issued container or duct-tape the lid/cap onto the at home sharps container
  • Filled sharps containers can be brought to any local pharmacy for disposal
